Justin Fields has lost his starting position with the New York Jets after weeks of uncertainty about the team’s quarterback direction. The organization announced Monday that veteran Tyrod Taylor will take over as the starter.
Head coach Aaron Glenn had previously avoided committing to a decision despite mounting concerns about Fields’ performance in an offense ranked last in passing efficiency. The benching leaves Fields facing an unclear path forward in his professional career.
According to ESPN’s Jonathan Jones, the quarterback’s prospects may be deteriorating significantly.
“We may be kind of turning the page for Justin Fields as that career backup at this point,” Jones said.

This demotion represents another chapter in a difficult stretch for the 2021 first-round pick. Fields is now in his third organization in three seasons and appears destined for another move during the offseason.
The contrast with other former first-round quarterbacks is stark. Daniel Jones has found success with the Indianapolis Colts, while Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold have emerged as legitimate MVP contenders, demonstrating that career turnarounds remain possible in the league.
When the Jets brought Fields to New York in March, they envisioned him as a reliable quarterback capable of stabilizing the roster during the transition away from Aaron Rodgers. His physical tools and mobility offered hope that he could develop into the answer the franchise sought.
However, the passing game’s consistent underperformance created escalating pressure that ultimately became unmanageable. The offense’s struggles forced the organization’s hand, making the switch to Taylor a necessary adjustment.
